About Da Siu Yan (Villain Hitting)
"Villain Hitting" (or "Da Siu Yan" in Cantonese) is a folk custom with a long history in the Guangdong region, and it has been listed as a Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage. The ritual attracts not only locals but has also become a cultural sight for many curious tourists.
Origin and Evolution
The custom of "Villain Hitting" is closely related to "Awakening of Insects" (Jingzhe), one of the twenty-four solar terms in the traditional Chinese calendar. In ancient agricultural societies, people believed that on this day, the spring thunder would awaken snakes, insects, and other creatures that had been hibernating. These creatures would then come out and harm crops. Therefore, farmers would make offerings to the White Tiger on this day, hoping to use its power to suppress these pests.
Over time, the custom gradually evolved from driving away pests to driving away "villains" in one's life. "Villains" broadly refers to people who cause trouble, spread gossip, or create obstacles in work, life, or relationships. As a result, "Villain Hitting" became a ritual to pray for peace, smoothness, and to drive away bad luck.
Cultural Significance
Although the ritual of "Villain Hitting" may seem to have a cursing connotation, its core meaning is not malicious revenge but rather a way to vent emotions and express a wish for a better life. In modern society, people face various pressures and dissatisfactions. "Villain Hitting" provides a channel for releasing negative emotions. Through this symbolic ritual, participants can find psychological comfort and renewed strength.
Therefore, "Villain Hitting" is more than just a superstition; its deeper meaning lies in:
- Praying for Peace and Good Fortune: The ritual is a way to drive away bad luck and obstacles, praying for a smooth year ahead.
- Cultural Heritage: As a part of Guangdong folk culture, it carries the history and beliefs of the region.
- Psychological Comfort: It provides an outlet for people to release stress and anxiety, helping them achieve psychological balance.
Ritual Steps
The traditional "Villain Hitting" ritual is usually performed by a professional spiritual practitioner, often called a "Baai San Po", at specific locations such as under bridges or at three-way intersections, which are believed to have a stronger spiritual energy. The entire ritual generally includes the following eight steps:
- Offering: Incense and candles are lit to inform the gods of heaven and earth.
- Reporting: The client's name and birth date are written on a "Hundred-Resolutions Talisman." If a specific villain is to be targeted, their information is written on a "Villain Paper."
- Villain Hitting: The "Villain Paper" is placed on a brick and forcefully struck with an old shoe or another symbolic weapon while chanting a mantra.
- Offering to the White Tiger: During the ritual on the day of the Awakening of Insects, a paper-made White Tiger is used for worship. A small piece of raw pork is dipped in pig's blood and placed in the paper tiger's mouth, symbolizing feeding the tiger so it will not harm people.
- Resolving: Rice, sesame seeds, peanuts, and beans are scattered, symbolizing the dissipation of disasters and misfortune.
- Blessing: A red "Noble Person Paper" is used to pray for assistance from noble people for the client.
- Offering of Treasures: Paper ingots and other spirit money are burned as offerings to spirits and gods.
- Casting Blocks: The ritual is considered successfully completed when a "Sheng Bei" is cast, meaning one block lands face up and the other face down.
